Born in England in 1933, Ian emigrated to Canada as a young man, and was a resident of West Vancouver for over 50 years. He was a self-taught artist who exhibited and sold widely, and his work is held in many corporate and private collections.

Ian generously donated two significant Public Art pieces to West Vancouver, “Nurture” at Dundarave Pier and “Emerging Power” at Ambleside Landing.

Working out of his studio in Dundarave, Ian sculpted mostly in marble and granite, but used any material, (preferably local), including wood.

Ian’s work became well-known for its hard-edged approach to animate subject matter. These powerful forms are suggestive rather than descriptive, and provide the viewer with a new way of seeing a familiar object.

A dedicated supporter of the West Vancouver arts community, and an active contributor to the Ferry Building Gallery and the Harmony Arts Festival, Ian is greatly missed.
Ian Rowles passed away on August 29, 2010.

Xwalacktun (Born Rick Harry) is a Squamish Nation artist whose works are recognized internationally. He received a “FANS” Honor Award from the North Vancouver Arts Council which acknowledged his contributions both locally and world-wide. A multimillion dollar home in Whistler featuring Xwalacktun’s four carved house posts received two Gold Georgie Awards in 2002. We also know him for the numerous and continuing work he has done with a large number of schools in 6 different districts.

Xwalacktun was born and raised in Squamish. He carries with him the rich ancestries of his mother’s and father’s clans of the Coast Salish and Kw’kwa k’wakw Nations. His father, Pekultn, carried a hereditary chieftainship from Seymour Creek in North Vancouver. He would like to acknowledge Capilano College and Emily Carr College of Art for teaching him the skills to have a start in his career. His endurance and commitment through trial and error helped propel him forward as an artist.

Xwalacktun’s works are seen throughout Vancouver and the surrounding areas. Some widely recognized pieces are: first nations designs on Vancouver 2010 Olympic wear, carved double doors for B.C. Hydro’s Burnaby and Vancouver locations, 30 totem poles throughout Scotland, cedar doors for Harrison Hot Springs Resort’s “Healing Springs Spa”, 2008 and 2009 Nordic World Cup Banners, 2008 medals for the Nordic World Cup Winter Games, elaborate snow boards designed for the First Nations Snowboard team, a metal, brick and glass sculpture in West Vancouver’s Ambleside Park, and a forty foot totem pole in New Hampshire for the Kokopelli Gallery. Xwalacktun collaborated with three artists in Beijing for the Canada Pavilion. He also designed the 2010 Olympic Bid Box lid and created the initial 2010 winter sports icons for the Olympic Bid Book. Another of Xwalacktun’s interesting works includes a carved stone piece which includes three ten foot basalt columns in the heart of Whistler Village. Recent significant works can be seen at the West Vancouver Community Center, Whistler Peak to Peak, University of Victoria, Capilano University, Emily Carr University and West Vancouver Secondary School. He is currently working on a pedestrian overpass crossing in Squamish BC and will have four large designs on it. Xwalacktun is an accomplished artist in wood, paper, stone, glass and metals.

Healing and growth have become a central theme around Xwalacktun’s work. By focusing on how the traditional stories relate to his own life, he suggests to us how to use this ancient knowledge to help heal ourselves and our community. The giving out of positive energy and seeing it come back through the young people is the reward that continues to feed his spirit so that he can give back to the community.

Frankie Watt is a British born artist now living and working in Vancouver. She studied Fine Art and Contemporary Dance at Goldsmith’s College, London and undertook post-graduate studies both at Brighton University, Heatherleys School of Fine Art in Chelsea and, more recently, she has undertaken studies in forensic facial identification at the University of Oklahoma, USA. Her work has been exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters annual exhibitions and is held in numerous private collections.

Artist’s Statement:My work results from my profound interest in the human face and the subtle nuance of features and expression that enable us to discern and indentify each other. Our faces are a reflection of a life lived and give silent voice to our thoughts and personality. A portrait will always be the combination of sitter and artist and captures the process of communication between the two at that moment in time.

Why would anyone walk along the high tide line at the beach and pick through all the slime and junk to find kelp, algae, driftwood, etc., take it home and sort and dry it? Art!
Joanne discovered about 25 years ago the great sculptural possibilities of kelp. She knew how to create baskets from branches and commercial materials and was able to convert the techniques to kelp.

Her baskets were on display at YVR in a large display case at international departures for 2006-2007. Her kelp work was been in many juried shows since the year 2000 including the Ferry Building, Seymour Art Gallery, the Squamish Library Foyer, and the Fox Glove Gallery on Bowen. She had major shows in 2003 at the Blackberry Gallery in Port Moody and the Newport Gallery in Squamish.
Her work is sold at Crafthouse on Granville Island, Seymour Art Gallery, the Silk Purse and Fibreworks at Maderia Park on the Sunshine Coast

Joanne also creates and teaches in a variety of art media including beading, basketry, doll making and felting. After being recently widowed, she moved to a condo near the beach in West Vancouver. She has two grown children and four young grandchildren. She has a degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Wisconsin. Joanne recently retired from part time work doing therapeutic recreation in a long term care senior’s home.

Her goal in all her endeavors whether working with seniors, adults, children or her own art pieces is to come up with original ways to solve problems to create or help others do so. In order to make a difference, she enjoys sharing her creative ideas and passions with others.

Michael Tickner was born in London, England in 1947. His artwork was first exhibited at the Passmore Art Gallery when he was 8 years old. He was accepted into the prestigious London School of Fine Art after graduating from High School with honours. It was not until he emmigrated to Canada in 1975 that he began painting on a professional level. He painted under the brush name of Granville, his grandmother’s maiden name, for over 12 years. During this time Michael painted impressionist paintings done with palette knife and ink washes. He then spent three years doing detailed pen and ink drawings. He switched to his own name and on July 19th, 1987, he went into his studio with the intention of painting a new style that he would continue with for the rest of his life. Since that important day, he has been developing what he calls the language of his style. The use of bright colours has continued from the start as Michael was determined that his paintings be of a high energy to uplift the viewer. He has taken a primitive style, which by definition is blocks of colours surrounded by a line, but is very flat; into a style that has depth and perspective. In essence he has created a new style. We have noticed that some other artists are now copying him, which is always a compliment.
Michael Tickner’s work is available in original paintings (He is presently taken commisssions), limited edition prints, posters and art cards.
In the Spring of 2003, the Vancouver Olympic Bid Committee used two of Michael Tickner’s images in a special signed and numbered print, as part of the final bid presentation package to the I. O. C. Members in Prague. Since then, his original paintings have become even more sought after. Michael Tickner’s One Man Show in the Spring was very successful. After finishing two commission pieces he will be doing new West Coast images for new limited edition giclee prints and also new images for Christmas cards. He will be pleased to do commission paintings after that, but will need to be booked.
Michael painted one of the orca whales for the “Orcas In The City” project sponsored by the B. C. Lions Society. It was a fundraiser for Canuck House and Easter Seal Camps and was a very successful project in which Michael was pleased to participate.

Lions Bay Art Gallery would be pleased to answer any questions you may have about the artist. Thank you for your interest.

NAME: Campo San Estefano, Venice Italy
MEDIUM: Watercolour
DIMENSIONS: 42″ x 31″
PRICE: $3000

I was born in Durango, Mexico in 1947. In 1963 I moved to the colonial town of Guanajuato where I started university studies in Architecture, and where I graduated as B.Arch. There my interest in the arts was fostered in the fine art studios of Professor Jesus Gallardo where I studied drawing, watercolour painting and metal etching. My formative professional years were spent in the heart of Guanajuato, and subsequently San Miguel Allende where I lived and practiced for 14 years. The influences of these two towns created the foundations of my artistic development.

Vancouver has been my home for the last 31 years. During that time I obtained M. Arch and Urban Design at UBC, and I taught for 5 years as part-time faculty in the design studios at the School of Architecture. My work as an Architect & Urban Designer has allowed me to travel to North & South America, Asia and Europe. These travels have influenced my artistic visions, particularly Italy where I paint and teach course in Plein Air painting in Venice every summer. I believe that working as both an architect and an artist provides complementary enhancement of my abilities in both areas of endeavour.

Watercolour is a magical medium that allows freedom, exploration, and discovery while developing a discipline. Painting and sketching “En Plein Air” are the foundations for artists to see, feel, smell and touch the reality of the amazing world in which we live. My professional interests in townscapes, cityscapes and the meeting of these with nature are the sources of my inspiration. Sketching places, buildings and objects have helped to strengthen my sense of proportion, scale, form and colour. The locations where I paint provide me with essential references to see and feel the variations of light and shadows complementing reality.

My work looks at the traditional models of the 17th century “I Vedutisti” in their vistas of cityscapes, as well as the improvisation of painting outdoors of the 19th century, as in the works of Turner, Sargent, Whistler, Holmes, Constable, and especially in the impressionist works of Manet and Monet.

There is beauty in everything; and in my work I want to capture the ordinary as it becomes extraordinary when light, shadow and colour contribute to create the spirit of a location.

INSPIRATION: Textures, patinas, recurring patterns, layers over layers and the way marks arrange themselves on found objects. These are Michela Sorrentino’s inspiration. Not unlike an archeologist, she digs, sands and scrapes into her paintings until she finds what she is looking for.
“I have always been excited by the treasures that appear along my daily path.
Empty snail shells, feathers, seed pods, bleached bones, and bits of paper find their place throughout my studio and home.” These objects continue to be a catalyst for Michela’s paintings. “Perhaps it is the journey travelled by these objects that appeals to me or maybe just how they arrive to be in my hand/possession”.
PROCESS: Michela rarely starts with a preconceived idea for a painting. The story develops and is revealed to her as she works into the painting. By using opaque and transparent layers she is obscuring and revealing the elements and their relationship to one another within the painting.
The bold marks and composition are revealed to the viewer from a distance. “I like to call this my ‘bold conversation’. As the viewer steps closer, I draw them into the painting by revealing a ‘quieter conversation’ which allows the viewer to discover the intricate and minute details which the many layers that have been covered and revealed result within the final work”.
The quiet conversation is where she finds comfort and feels most at home. Making scratches and marks that seem like they have been there forever.
The bolder conversation, although scary to her, is absolutely crucial to the painting. Without taking the risks that bolder conversation entails, the quiet conversation cannot be heard…or seen. “Without the bold conversation the painting remains precious and inanimate. When I succeed with engaging my bold conversation the painting breathes and comes alive”.
