Silk Purse: Take Yourself There

HHosted by the West Vancouver Community Arts Council

Experience intimate reflections on the past, the nature of memory & possibilities for the future through evocative contemporary artworks by four insightful & talented artists.

Patti Henderson & Katarina Thorsen's collaborative work, Recapitulation is a series of ephemeral & layered mixed media collages combining photography, stitch, painting & text. Weaving together snippets of memory into cohesive narratives through collage, the artists rewrite their own stories, reshaping old wounds into sources of wisdom & resilience - paving the way for transformation & growth.

Amber Nordstrand's hauntingly beautiful gouache paintings of abandoned houses blur realism with a painterly touch. While honouring these forgotten witnesses of the past through 'architectural portraits', Nordstrand also highlights the current housing crisis. She hopes to spark discussion of ecological, economic & cultural change by documenting these liminal spaces on the edge of existence.

Emily van Lidth de Jeude's expressive portraits are concerned with aspects of parenting - trauma, growth & hope. Detailed graphite drawings of children are encompassed by swirling masses of colour & texture in oil paint as they strive to grow into themselves & beyond generational burdens & hopes. As a parent herself, van Lidth de Jeude explores the roles & impact of parents, as both warnings & beacons of promise.
